Christmas Music at the Library

If you need a break from all the holiday chaos, visit your local library and enjoy some beautiful Christmas music!

Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library is proud to host a musical performance by Liquid Avenue. This group has four talented singers: Gregory Barker, Matthew Barker, Chester Kener, and Nicholas Nielson. They will be performing many Christmas songs including: We Three Kings, Angels We Have Heard on High, The King is Born Today, Deck the Halls, and more.

This performance is on Saturday, December 22, at 2:30. It is free and open to the public. Join us for some wonderful Christmas music and amazing talent at the library at 113 South Garfield in Pocatello. Questions may be directed to Becky Hadley at bhadley@marshallpl.org.

A Fond Farewell

A fond farewell goes out to our well-loved Early Childhood Librarian, Marcia Burnham. Marcia has been leading the story time activities for the littlest library users for more than six years. She has seen little babies who have visited the library for the first time with their parents or grandparents grow up and begin to attend school on their own! She has touched many lives over the course of her stay. Now she and her husband have retired and have moved back to Marcia’s home town of Sterling, Colorado. We will miss her and wish her the best in all her endeavors!

Kathryn Poulter, Children’s Librarian

All I Want for Christmas Is…

...new carpet, a small meeting room and some quieter space. These will all be added to the nonfiction floor of the Library – just in time for the holidays! In order for these to be installed, the Library will be closed December 8 through December 16.

Santa’s helpers (library staff) will move the books on the top floor to the ground level, all 40,000+ of them!!!! The empty shelves will be moved twice to accommodate the removal of the old carpet and installation of the new. The new carpet matches the carpet that was installed last year on the main level of the building. No more wrinkles or tears!

The Friends of the Marshall Public Library have purchased the walls for a new room to be located near the Reference Office. This room can be scheduled for small group use the same as the Community Room and Kids Corner.

Some tables and chairs will be moved to an aisle near the history books. With an entire row of books between the tables and the general area of the floor, the noise level will be less than in the current configuration.

The Library Needs Your Minutes!

We need minutes!

We only have one month left to meet our goal of 100,000 minutes in the national Million Minute Family Challenge. We are just shy of 85,000 minutes already logged so everybody get together with family and friends and play as many games as you can before December 31. Don’t forget to call the library and report your minutes. Remember, each game is timed, not the players. For example, if 4 people play Scrabble for 30 minutes, your total time is 30 minutes.

Come to our Game Day on December 29 from 10am-5pm and rack up the minutes! Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm towards our challenge and have fun playing games!

Young Adult News

In November

In an effort to encourage youth in grades 6-9 to explore the databases on the library’s website, the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICFL) sponsored a Kids Quest online adventure in October. This involved the kids working their way through several pages of an online quest, printing a certificate of completion, and turning it in to their public library. The ICFL had a drawing from these entries for an iPod Touch and Irving Middle School student Dylan won for his participation.

November 2-4, I had the opportunity to attend the third biennial Young Adult Literature Symposium in St. Louis, Missouri. I was excited to be able to network with other teen librarians from across the country, attend some interesting sessions, meet and greet several YA authors, and bring home about a dozen new books! AND I got up close and personal with the Gateway Arch, the nation’s tallest man-made monument at 630 feet!

In December

Want a new craft idea for Christmas? Hanna Geshelin of Pocatello Sewing School will share an activity for teens to create a special door hanger and share other fun ideas for textile crafts just in time for Christmas. This free activity will be held December 4 from 4-5pm and is open to all youth in grades 7-12.

Winter Dreams 3….. An after-hours open mic night where teens can share their writing with an audience of their peers.

Kath Ann Hendricks, Young Adult Librarian

Winter Is for Reading

Warm up this winter by wrapping up in a warm blanket and reading. This January, the Marshall Public Library is having a winter reading program, "There's Snow Better Time to Read." This program will be for all ages and reading levels.

Participants will set goals of how many books will be read by end of February. When the goal is met their name will be entered into a drawing. For those under 12 the goal will be based on how many hours they read and for those under 5 the goal will be based on the hours someone reads to them. (The minimum goal is 3 books for those 12 and older or 5 hours for those under 12. One entry per person.)

Mark your calendars because the program will run January 7 through March 4. Grab a warm blanket and a book and set your goal to read this winter. Registration begins January 7, 2013.

Stress Less Yoga

On Saturday, November 10, at 10 am at the Marshall Public Library, local yoga student Natalie Echanis will teach easy yoga techniques that you can do anywhere to help lessen your stress during the holidays.

The holidays are the most stressful time of year for many of us. The stretching and breathing methods of yoga can help us to release that stress and relax our bodies and minds. Yoga techniques can be used as soon as stress arises, even while sitting in our offices at work or standing in line at the store, to help us release tension and regain our calm.

Echanis, a registered dietitian, graduated from the University of Idaho with a B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences. She has practiced yoga for five years and is working towards her NETA yoga certification. Echanis will teach easy yoga techniques to help you to relax and tap into your energy during the holidays. No special clothing or equipment is required, but please come prepared to stretch and move.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information, call Amy at 232-1263 ext. 21.

Model Railroad Display

Marshall Public Library is proud to display the handiwork of Terry Bunn during the month of November.

Mr. Bunn, an avid model railroader, has turned his skills to making models of horse-drawn vehicles, specializing in covered wagons. The historical accuracy and museum-quality detail of his models has assured one an honored place in the Fort Hall Replica gift shop. Mr. Bunn’s handmade replicas feature moving parts such as working brakes. He even uses period blacksmithing methods to wrap metal around the wagon wheels.

Come see these exquisite models on display through November on the Reference floor of the Library!

Healthy Holiday Eating

Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a different kind of pie every night of the week...the holidays are full of delicious foods. For those of us trying to eat healthily, the holiday food found at both home and office can offer a seemingly insurmountable temptation.

On Tuesday, November 13 at 7pm, the Marshall Public Library will host a program on healthy holiday eating. Audrey Liddil, a Family and Consumer Science education for the Bannock County Extension Office, will discuss maintaining good nutrition habits even in the midst of all the savory seasonal treats.

Grieving During the Holidays

The holidays after the loss of a loved one can be an especially difficult time of year. Traditions and celebrations assume new meaning after a death, and those in mourning may be asking themselves if they want to celebrate or if they should even try to pretend like nothing has changed. Sadness from a loss years ago may also become fresh and painful again during the holidays.

On November 17 at 1pm at the Marshall Public Library, Roberta Wold and Dona Robinson, Licensed Social Workers, will address how to cope with grief during the holidays and special occasions. They will discuss the importance of communication, how to involve family members in the process of healing, and starting new traditions after the death of a loved one.

For more information on this program, please call Roberta Wold or Dona Robinson at Alliance Hospice at 478-6677 or Amy at 232-1263 ext. 21.

Crazy for Couponing?

Then come to Couponing 101!

Local coupon expert Sally O’Keef will teach beginning couponers at Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library how to get the most out of their hard-earned money.

On Tuesday, October 16, from 6-8pm, Sally will offer insight into her years of successful couponing. A stay-at-home mom who started couponing shortly after the birth of her first child, Sally used coupons to maintain her family’s standard of living after her husband returned to school. Years of practical couponing experience give Sally a unique perspective on how to use coupons properly and effectively and she will answer couponing questions that you may not even know to ask. For example, do you know how to pair Sunday coupons with sales to save even more money? Or how to use coupons to build up your food storage? And what the heck is a Blinky?

Learn Sixty Languages @Your Library

Your library is pleased to announce that it now offers Pronunciator!

This online language-learning system is free for all library patrons. With 60 of the world's most popular languages and ESL courses in 50 languages, the Pronunciator is focused on quickly building conversational skills through a combination of interactive online drills, scored quizzes, and downloadable audio lessons and phrasebooks.

Pronunciator offers five possible levels of instruction for each language. The lessons cover vocabulary, verbs, simple sentences, and conversation. One level, specifically for tourists and business travelers, teaches 1,500 essential phrases that cover everyday situations. Each course also has up to 350 hours of audio lessons which patrons can download to a portable device or burn to CD. Appropriate for children as well as adults, Pronunciator is designed to meet the language-learning needs of our entire community.

"We are delighted to add Pronunciator to the premium resources we offer our patrons," said Gaila Butikofer, Reference Department Supervisor. "There are many reasons a person learns a language -- for work, travel, school, or simply personal enrichment -- and Pronunciator has something for everyone."

Stop by Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library for an introduction to Pronunciator or access the program via the library website at www.marshallpl.org. For more information, contact the library’s Reference Department at 232-1263 ext. 21.

Welcome, New Staffer Craig!

Hello, my name is Craig W. Korten. I was born October 24, 1969, in Omaha, Nebraska. I am the youngest of two, my brother being 14 months older. I attended school in a suburb of Omaha called Ralston. I graduated from Ralston High School in 1988. I worked various jobs growing up, from being a dishwasher in a buffet style restaurant to cooking chicken at KFC and working at an Ace Hardware store. I moved to Idaho in 1991 and soon was attending Idaho State University where I graduated with a degree in Machine Technology.

While in school I met the love of my life. Her name is Lupe. Pronounce it however you like. We wed soon after in August and started our family soon after with my oldest daughter Paige and then my youngest Pashence. Once again good luck on pronouncing her name but it sounds just like it looks. We chose her name because she was a scheduled c-section so we knew what day and time pretty much so we had to be patient for the day to arrive. I enjoy fishing and we spend a ton of time going to softball tournaments for my daughters as they both excel at the sport.

The Most Valuable Card You Own

What is the most valuable card in your wallet? What card gives you unlimited
power to join the Information Age? What is the smartest card you can own? The
answer to all three of these questions is: your Marshall Public Library card! Why is
your library card so powerful? It is the key to a vast world of printed and digital
knowledge and, after all, knowledge is power.

In addition to Marshall’s own extensive collection of printed media and access to
the collections of other libraries, we also provide access to many “members only”
online databases, including the Auto Repair Reference Center and Heritage Quest
Online. Our Idaho Archives is a treasure trove of rare books and other
publications with information on Idaho’s past and present, especially focusing on
Bannock County. The library also offers basic computer classes as well as other
workshop opportunities. Most importantly, the library comes with an expert staff
at your disposal, eager to help you power up your life as you develop new skills,
activate new life strategies, and even re-explore old interests.

September is National Library Card Sign-up month, and Marshall Public Library
would like to sign YOU up! If you are a resident of the City of Pocatello, you are
eligible for a library card. Please bring with you a valid photo ID and proof of
address such as a bill or other official document that has been mailed to you. If
you are NOT a Pocatello resident but have a card from another area library, you
can still access the power of Marshall. Please have ready your current library card
and a valid photo ID when you come see us at 113 S. Garfield in Old Town

Titanic Display Commemorates Anniversary

New Collection and New Contest for Adults!

In February, the library introduced a brand new collection of graphic novels
for adults. Graphic novels are books told in pictures or sequential art.
Generally, a page in a graphic novel is made up of multiple illustrations set
in panels with text. The flexibility of this format opens the doors to endless
storytelling possibilities.
In celebration of this new collection, the library is hosting a trivia contest at
the College Market (604 S. 8th) on the second Saturday of each month. Our
next contest is on Saturday, March 10, at 2:30 pm. Join us for a fun game of
trivia based on subjects considered geeky: sci-fi, fantasy, science, literature,
history, video games, math, pop culture and others. You can visit the
Marshall Public Library Facebook page for some warm-up questions. Prizes
will be awarded!
