Marshall Public Library is updating our notification system! By late fall, we
hope to have a new system in place that will allow patrons to receive hold and
overdue notifications via email or text message.

Please help make the transition smooth by updating your phone and email
addresses now. There are forms available at the Circulation Desk for you to

Dr. John Kallas, author of Edible Wild Plants – Foods from Dirt to Plate, will be at Marshall Public Library on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 pm to discuss how to identify, harvest, prepare and enjoy nutritious, delicious and abundant edible wild plants. Dr. Kallas’s presentation is a sampling of his book which makes wild foods understandable and accessible, revealing how easy it is to incorporate them into everyday modern life. Dr. Kallas is a trained botanist with a doctorate in nutrition, has investigated edible wild plants since 1970 and taught about them since 1978. He founded Wild Food Adventures in 1993 and was the primary writer and editor of the Wild Food Adventurer newsletter. A question/answer period and book signing will follow the presentation. Celebrate National Library Week @Your Library

National Library Week is April 8-10. The 2012 theme is “You Belong @ Your Library.” Whether you come for Internet access, research, storytime, or to check out a great book, Marshall Public Library is your one-stop-shop for entertainment! To celebrate National Library week, Marshall Public Library is hosting a variety of events on Tuesday, April 10, from 4-6pm.

For children, join in on a treasure hunt in the children’s area. Have you seen little Hobb’s hole? What about the brand-new baby fish? Use your thinking skills to meander all over the area and explore some of the exciting and interesting parts of the children’s area. You may even catch a glimpse of Hogwarts through the Harry Potter room. Come and discover some of our hidden treasures!

For adults, participate in a round of Geek Trivia: Library Edition. This popular trivia contest is being presented at the library for one night only! Expect questions on literature as well as television, movies, video games, and other aspects of popular culture. Participate as a team or solo to win a prize and learn something new. Also make sure to explore Marshall Public Library’s Reference Department (where you can find the answers to many trivia questions) and Find Your Family @ the Library with Marshall Public Library’s walk through genealogical resources.

Teens will enjoy a poetry scavenger hunt that will include both real and virtual elements with the opportunity to win treats and prizes. All attendees can commemorate a fun evening at the library with a make-and-take craft project and refreshments!

Celebrate Poetry @ Your Library

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Marshall Public Library is hosting its twelfth annual Poetry Wall. The wall, on the second floor by the Reference Desk, displays poetry from local poets. If you would like to add your poem to the wall in April, just drop off a copy at the Reference Desk.

The celebration continues throughout April with Poetry Bombs, an activity especially for teens. Poetry Bombs, or Random Acts of Poetry, occur when the teens select a favorite verse, stanza, or phrase and post it randomly in places such as their own or their friends’ Facebook and Twitter accounts. Titanic Display Commemorates Anniversary

On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after colliding with an iceberg. An estimated 1,517 people perished, and the public’s fascination was forever caught by the tragic event.

This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking. To commemorate the date, the library has a display of items reminiscent of and connected to the event. Books on the Titanic and the legends and controversy surrounding it are also on display and available to be checked out. Visit our display and check out books on what is perhaps the most famous sea tragedy ever.

Sweet Adelines Bring Music to the Library

Music comes to the library with a choral performance by Sweet Adelines!

From 2 until 4 on the afternoon of Saturday, April 21, Sweet Adelines will host an open house full of music for everyone. The group sings four-part a capella barbershop harmony, and they will both perform and teach the audience to sing four-part rounds with them.

Sweet Adelines is an international organization for ladies who love to sing and perform. Any woman age twelve or older is invited to join and learn about music as well as gain invaluable performance skills.

Drop by the library on April 21 and enjoy a beautiful afternoon of books and music!
