Grieving During the Holidays

The holidays can be an especially painful time of year for people who are mourning the death of a loved one. Whether the loss occurred over the past year or decades ago, this season can bring renewed or intensified grief.

On December 19 from 1-2 pm, licensed social worker Roberta Wold will present a program at the library on how to survive the holidays after the death of a loved one. This program is free and open to all members of the public.

Exciting Enhancements to Adult Fiction!

As you may or may not know, the library will be closed from December 12-17. During this time, we will be re-carpeting the first floor of the library, which means removing all the materials from their current locations. As we re-assemble the adult fiction collections you know and love, we will be taking this opportunity to improve the layout.

The adult fiction paperbacks will no longer be shelved by genre (western, mystery, science fiction, romance, etc). Instead, we will be filing all the paperbacks by author, which will allow us to keep all of an author’s titles together. The paperbacks will continue to be labeled with genre stickers for your convenience. Other planned enhancements include placing high demand adult movies (DVD and VHS) in a more prominent spot and providing the growing adult audiobooks collection with some room to expand. Also be on the lookout for the inclusion of a new collection in adult fiction: graphic novels for adult audiences.

Newspaper Archives Available @ Your Library

History buffs and genealogists alike will enjoy using Access Newspaper Archive, available at Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library. Billions of articles from 5,781 historical newspapers worldwide are included in Access Newspaper Archive. Discover fascinating news in archived newspapers hundreds of years old, including obituaries, birth announcements, sports articles, comics, and more. The newspaper articles are full-page and all are searchable.

This database is available for use in the library using the library’s Internet computers. For more information, call the Reference Department at 232-1263 ext. 21.

December Library Hours

From December 12-17, the library will be closed for replacement of the
first floor carpeting. No materials will be due during those dates. Our
regular outreach programs, including the bookmobile, will continue.
The library will also have shortened hours throughout December and
will be open 10 am-6 pm Monday through Saturday. The shortened
hours will allow library staff to complete projects and attend trainings.
The library will resume its regular hours of 9 am to 9 pm, Monday
through Thursday, and 9 am to 6 pm, Friday and Saturday on Tuesday,
January 3, 2012.

Bookmobile Hits the Road!

The new bookmobile is on the road! Due to the generosity of our community and continued fundraising efforts over the past three years, Marshall Public Library’s bookmobile is officially launching on Tuesday, October 11, at 6 p.m.

In the midst of celebrating 100 years of public library service in Pocatello in 2007, a survey was mailed out to community members asking them what service they would like to see at the library to kick off the next 100 years. An astounding 82% of those surveyed chose a bookmobile. Although the staff and community were excited about having a bookmobile, the Library didn’t have enough money in the budget to fund the $150,000 project. In stepped community leaders like Vicky Mainzer, Jim Fullerton, and the Friends of the Library. And Nickelmania was born.

Nickelmania was based on the idea that contributors would donate a nickel for every birthday they’d celebrated. This allowed everyone to to contribute during an economically difficult time without feeling a financial pinch.

From the donation and installation of the shelves by Dorsey Hill and H. Everett Curzon and the collection jars donated by Heinz Co to the hundreds of schoolchildren who dug deep into their pockets, making the bookmobile a reality has truly been a community effort. Local talent also supported the cause through donation of their work as shown by Steve Eaton and Mike Sanders’ composition of the fundraiser’s theme song and local artist Ryan Roghaar’s creation of the Nickelmania graphic. And of course the entire project would not have been possible without the supreme generosity shown by Success By Six in helping us to secure a bus so our bookmobile would actually be mobile!

And now, after three long years of effort, the bookmobile is ready to take to the streets. Come celebrate our success at the official launch and open house!

Volunteer Bookmobile Drivers Needed

We are looking for a few more volunteers who would be willing to help drive a few times each month. Volunteers with RV or truck driving experience are preferred. Summer Reading @your Library

The Library Summer Reading Program is not just for kids anymore! Yes, there are still fun and exciting activities planned for children, but there is also a reading program for teens, and an enjoyable and rewarding opportunity for adults as well. Registration is required for each program. Registration begins on June 6, 2011.

The theme of the adult program is Novel Destinations. Each participant will receive a passport to keep track of reading to mark off reading challenges. The Teen program, You Are Here, is specially targeted for reading fun for young adults. There will be such activities as international food fiestas, movie days, prizes, and more. Anyone entering seventh grade through high school can participate.

For the children ages birth through twelve, there is an especially exciting program: One World, Many Stories. Children will receive an age-appropriate list of activities. After finishing ten of these activities, they will receive a prize. Ten more activities completed will earn another prize. In addition, there will be daily events at the library including stories on Monday afternoons for all ages, movies on Tuesdays, visits to area parks on Wednesdays with the Book Wagon, Art Institute on Thursdays, and Multicultural Fridays. Come to the library, and get the whole family involved!

Grab your knitting needles and your yarn for World Wide Knit in Public Week. People all over the world will be knitting together June 11 through June 19. World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005. Over the years there have been events held in Australia, China, England, Finland, France, Ireland, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, the United States, and many more countries.

As part of the Adult Summer Reading Program "Novel Destinations," Marshall Public Library will be participating on Thursday, June 16 at 6:00 in the kids' corner. This program is open to all ages and skill levels. The evening is not just for knitters; other yarn projects are welcome too. Legos, Camping, and Philippines on Display

This month was an exciting month for displays upstairs in non-fiction! We have gathered together a book display that focuses on camping for the summer months ahead.

This month's Read Around the World case is focussing on the Philippines. Come see the many beautiful items on dipslay from this wonderful country.

For those Lego lovers everywhere, we have two display cases filled with hundreds and hundreds of Legos. Come play the Lego Search and Find Game. While you are reminiscing of childhood days, make a guess as to how many Legos are actually in the cases. In celebration of the summer reading program, the winner will receive a Lego set of a famous U.S. landmark.

Meet the New Bookmobile @Your Library!

After more than a year's worth of planning, collecting donations, sending a green bookworm to slither into classrooms and march in the Homecoming Parade, and carefully negotiating, Pocatello's Marshall Public Library has acquired a beautiful new bookmobile for the community.

We have yet to set the route and finish all the details pertaining to the service, but we can now proudly announce: WE HAVE A BOOKMOBILE! It would never have been possible without the generosity and dedication of many, many people. By far the majority of the funds used to purchase the vehicle came from school children. School District 25 graciously allowed us to go into the schools and explain both our vision and our need. The response was overwhelming and heartwarming. The best part is that school-age children will be some of the greatest beneficiaries of the bookmobile service, and those children are the ones who have made it possible for the purchase to take place.

So, to show our gratitude and to present this beautiful bookmobile to the community, we are having a party! Please come to the Marshall Public Library on Wednesday, April 13, anytime from 4pm to 7pm to see the new bookmobile, walk inside it, enjoy cookies and punch, and help us celebrate. Everyone is invited. It will be a wonderful event, the culmination of a lot of planning, a lot of giving, and a lot of community participation. This is Pocatello's Bookmobile--come and get acquainted!

Celebrate National Library Week @Your Library

National Library Week is April 10-16. Join Pocatello's Marshall Public Library on Saturday, April 16, at 10:30am to celebrate your story by creating a fun mobile. You bring in 2-4 pictures (4"x6" or smaller, please) and the library will provide supplies to make a mobile to journal about and display your pictures. This is a family-friendly craft and registration is not required.

You may also sign-up during National Library Week to participate in the library's Earth Day Challenge. Pick up your challenge card to find out how you can be more "Earth-Friendly." Complete ten of the tasks and bring the card back on April 22 to receive an Earth Day prize! All ages are welcome to participate.

Celebrate Poetry @Your Library

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Marshall Public Library is hosting its eleventh annual Poetry Wall. The wall, on the second floor by the Reference Desk, displays poetry from local poets. If you would like to add your poem to the wall, just drop off a copy at the Reference Desk.

The celebration will continue toward the end of the month with the airing of Bill Moyers's documentary "Fooling with Words" on Saturday, April 23, at 2pm. The film explores the vitality and diversity of contemporary poetry through intimate interviews and performance readings at North America's largest poetry festival. The library will give away a copy of the DVD after the showing. This movie is free and open to the public. And there will be popcorn!

The Memory Chalet by Tony Judt

Tony Judt was a historian whose speciality was the twentieth century after World War II. He was renowned particularly for the book Postwar. He died in August 2010. Some years before he died, he was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), a nervous system disorder characterized by the progressive loss of muscular control. Over time, ALS sufferes lose the ability to walk, use their hands, speak, and, ultimately, breathe. There is no accompanying deterioration of consciousness. Patients become trapped in their own bodies.

That this happened to Tony Judt is essential to understanding his book The Memory Chalet, but the book is not primarily about his experience with the disease. Judt had to develop coping mechanisms to take him out of the confines of his incapacitation when he was lying alone in his bed at night, mostly as a means of enabling him to sleep. His method was to go on travels through his memories. The following day he would dictate his thoughts generated by these experiences. This is a wonderful book.

A Tea-rific Program!

Over 200 princesses, princes, knights, dragons, and their lords and ladies-in-waiting graced the library with their presence at our Princess Tea Party on Saturday, February 12th! Following a Princess Parade around the library, we enjoyed crafting some royal attire, which included crowns, scepters, and jewel necklaces. Once we were properly outfitted, we attended a royal tea complete with mini-cupcakes, dainty tea sandwiches, and princess punch! Everyone looked amazing for this fabulous program! Thank you to the staff for all your hard work and many thanks to all our attendees for your energy and enthusiasm.

Book Group Learns New Skill

In February, the Wednesday book group discussed the book Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas. The main character in the book is a quilter in a mining town. To get into the spirit of the book, the book group learned how to tie a quilt. Each of them quilted as they talked about the book and also learned the history behind the quilt squares that had been passed down and given to a member of the group. This member also shared the story behind some of the 50-year-old squares that had been made from her relatives' shirts, dresses, and aprons.

This group reads a variety of books. Some of the favorite books they have discussed over the past five years include Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, Poison Study by Maria Snyder, The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, and The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.

Read This Book! America's First Clash with Iran

This little-remembered chapter in our relations with Iran deserves far more attention than it has received. Author Allen Zatarain's book does an acceptable job of explaining the historical background that resulted in the United States providing escort to shipping in the Persian Gulf during the later phases of the Iran-Iraq war. He provides a narrative of the most serious confrontations between the United States and Iran. American policy had to walk a fine line between compelling Iran to leave shipping alone and preventing confrontations with them from escalating into a full-scale war.

One of the closing events of the conflict, the downing of an Iranian civilian airline by the USS Vincennes, an Aegis-class missile frigate, is dealt with in considerable detail.

America's First Clash with Iran is available for checkout at the Marshall Public Library.

Library Welcomes New Director, Eric Suess

On February 9, 2011, the Marshall Public Library will host a meet & greet for its new director, Eric Suess (pronounced Cease).
Patrons and the general public are invited to attend, ask questions and enjoy light refreshments between 5:00 and 7:00PM.

On January 9, 2011, the Marshall Public Library Board of Directors unanimously voted in the Notre Dame graduate to help move the library forward, as he did so in the past thirteen years in Michigan, five years as Director of the Commerce Township Community Library in Township, Michigan.
Eric was not only successful in building and maintaining relationships with local Friends, Library Board and Township officials, but also created Township Michigan’s first community public library. That library today still consistently posts statistics that match with libraries serving much larger communities and with much bigger staffs and resources.
Eric is a bright, level-headed and passionate individual, and is very happy to be here with his family in Pocatello. Eric will reside with his wife Karen, and their 17 year old son Aaron who will be attending Century High School. Their daughter Sarah, who is completing her BA in Education, will stay in Michigan after she graduates.
Eric holds a BA in Government and English, and a non-degree program in Theology from the University of Notre Dame, a MS in Library Science and PhD studies in Information & Library Studies from the University of Michigan.
In addition to his love for the theater, Eric is an active member of the National Puzzlers League and a frequent contributor to their monthly publication.

Literally Talented Teens Kick Off New Year

Literally Talented Teens kicked off 2011 with their first meeting in mid-January at Pocatello's Marshall Public Library.

Members of the creative writing group meet every other Thursday to share their original poetry and prose fiction and to discuss the unique joys and challenges of being a teen writer. The next meeting of this fun and supportive group is on January 27 at 4pm.

Kids' Writing Group "Write On" Continues into 2011

Write On, the kids' creative writing group of Pocatello's Marshall Public Library, began their second year this January.

Young poets, novelists, journalists and scribes of all types attend the meetings to read their writing and discuss the writing process. If you're between the ages of 9 and 12 and like to write, please join us to share your creative work in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Email Classes

The Marshall Public Library will begin offering free email classes in January. These classes are for people who already have some knowledge of the computer and who would like assistance in setting up an email account.

From job applications to shopping online to using customer service, more and more online interactions require that people have email addresses to access information. But setting up an email account can be a frustrating and time-consuming process. If you would like assistance with this, please register for one of the Friday classes at the library.

The classes are free and open to the public. Seating is very limited, however, so please register beforehand. You may register by calling the library at 232-1263 ext. 21 or by stopping by the Reference Desk on the second floor. Please contact John or Amy at the library for more information.

LearningExpress Library

One of the most potentially valuable resources available to library patrons is the LearningExpress Library which can be accessed online through www.lili.org. The Learning Express Library consists of links to a number of learning centers targeted to different users. Here is a list of the top level links:

GED Roundtable Discussion at the Library

Angela Davis from the Southeast Idaho Community Action Agency (SEICAA) and Margaret Jacobs from Idaho State University Adult Basic Education will lead a GED roundtable discussion at the library on January 18 at 7pm. This discussion is for people who are interested in earning or who are currently earning their GEDs and who want to learn more about the local resources available to them.

The Heart of the Library

Most people figure that books are the heart of the library, but the staff and board know that at the Marshall Public Library, the heart of the library can be found in the quiet, humble, caring woman known as Jolene Hottel. For 28 years, Jolene has been quietly and efficiently keeping the library together, making it shine, and helping on many more levels than her job description would suggest.

Working Monday through Saturday and probably far more than 40 hours every week, Jolene has worked behind the scenes to make the library a warm, clean, and inviting place to visit. For the staff, her sensible wisdom has brought peace to difficult situations and practical help in everyday matters.

Twenty-eight years ago, Jolene would never have imagined how quickly the decades would have flown by. During her time at the library she raised her family, saw staff members come and go, always kept the library clean and running smoothly. But now Jolene has retired. Her last day of work was on the last day of 2010. Like a bird on a branch turning its head back to look behind, Jolene can only glance behind and wonder where it all went. Well, the days and months and years of hard work to make the library sparkle may be behind her, but the loving influence Jolene had on everyone she came into contact with will endure. Happy retirement, Jolene, you'll always be the heart of the library to us!

December Hours

The Library's hours will change during the month of December.

In December, the library will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This will permit library staff to obtain additional training and catch up on projects. Staff training will include courses on customer service, public safety, and CPR training. Library staff will also “read” the library shelves to ensure that the books are in the correct order and easy to find.

The Library will also be closed December 24 and 25, 2010, and January 1, 2011 in recognition of the holidays.

Regular hours will resume Monday, January 3, 2011. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Kathy Watson to Retire

Thirty-Four Years of Service

Thirty four and a half years ago, a young woman walked into the Raymond Branch of Pocatello’s public library to begin a new job. This woman, whom we all know as Kathy Watson, or The Book Lady, found her niche in the library world and has been a fixture of the public library ever since. Now, after being the face of the library for so many people, Kathy is shelving her final book and taking her leave. No doubt that she will continue reading and laughing and learning in her next adventures, but certainly after so long a time, she deserves a rest.

Kathy calls herself an “accidental librarian.” That is, she did not intend to spend the greater part of her life shelving books, taking books to homebound patrons, and interacting with the many visitors of the public library. Kathy originally went to school to become an elementary/special ed teacher. But after some upheavals in her life, she found a spot in the library and felt that she had come home. Indeed she has made the library a kind of welcoming home for many, many people over the years. As Kathy said, “I probably know half the town if I can remember who they are!”

Some of Kathy’s responsibilities have included her first station in the long-gone Raymond Branch; Outreach librarian, Circulation Supervisor; and most recently, Associate Director. Of those different titles, each has been great in its own way, Kathy said, but the time she spent doing outreach, taking books and library materials to homebound patrons, holds a special place in her heart. “It was a chance to visit with dear friends in their living rooms and enter their lives,” Kathy said. “If you like reading and people, what better job is there?” Kathy recalled Cliff and Birdie Foster, one of many of her outreach families that became as close as her own family. “And so many other people,” she said.”My life has been greatly blessed by the people I have met.”

People, both those she worked with at the library and the members of the public that Kathy met during her long tenure, have been the source of her greatest joys. Kathy’s reach stretched far outside of Pocatello as well. After being involved for years with the Idaho Library Association, including serving as chair of the Idaho Book of the Year Award committee, Kathy mustered her courage and ran for president of the Pacific Northwest Library Association, an organization spanning the states of Idaho, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Montana, and the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. She was elected and served as president in 2008-2009.

Now Kathy’s thoughts are bittersweet. “When I think about retirement,” Kathy reflected, “I wonder who I will be. I’ve been The Book Lady for so long, I think it’s time to try something different. How about Kathy Watson, author?” Indeed, Kathy loves to write and is, as she reports, working on a book right now. We look forward to reading her words in years to come!

When asked if she had any parting words, Kathy, with a watery eye, said, “I want to express my appreciation and thanks to those who have made my years here the happy ones they’ve been. It’s been a great ride!” Thank you for those happy years, Kathy. We will miss you!

Older Job Seekers Roundtable Discussion

This free and informal discussion is for older, experienced workers who are looking for a new job or are re-entering the workforce. Many experienced workers are returning to work or are looking for new jobs due to the state of the economy. Older job seekers offer skills and expertise to potential employers but they also face particular challenges. New Faces in Circulation

The circulation staff would like to welcome three new employees to our staff, Becky Mitton, Jamie Bunn, and Greg Grasso. They all started working at the library in September. MPL also has a new custodian, Stephen Glenn, who started in July.

Stephen was born and raised in Pocatello. He has 2 children and 6 grandchildren. He like to read and listen to audiobooks about history. In his free time, he likes to fix things.

Becky is from Pocatello and has lived her most of her life. Along with a wonderful husband, she has 5 children and 6 1/2 grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys playing volleyball. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is one of her favorite books. Becky also reads a wide variety of action, suspense, romance, and children's books.

Jamie is from Burley but has lived in Pocatello for 8 years. She enjoys crocheting hats, toys, and Nintendo-themed items. She is the owner of a rescued cat named Asphalt. Jamie's favorite series is the Dark Tower books by Stephen King. She likes to read realistic fiction along with horror. Jamie also helps out in the youth department by monitoring the KaBam! book group for children.

Greg has lived in Pocatello for 20+ years, but is from Stamford, CT. He is the owner of 3 cats and 2 dogs. You can often find Greg reading suspenseful fiction, military history, and covert ops. His favorite author is Nelson DeMille. He is an amateur chef and enjoys cooking and entertaining for his friends in his spare time.

We are very excited to have Stephen, Becky, Jamie, and Greg among our staff here at the library and are looking forward to getting to know them better and seeing them share their knowledge with the public. As you meet them, please feel free to welcome them to our staff.

Free Computer Classes

Beginning in August, Marshall Public Library will again offer computer classes for beginners. It will be a series of five classes. The first class will focus on initial introduction to the computer, including instruction on how to use a mouse to point and click, and the following classes will increase in difficulty. The second and third class will familiarize students with Microsoft Word, the fourth class will address using the Internet, and in the fifth and final class the students will create an email account.

The computer classes are geared toward adults over 50 who have little to no computer experience. You may attend all, one, or any combination of the classes. Classes are free and open to the public but registration is required.

The first class will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 9 am. The same information will be repeated on Thursday, August 12 at 7 pm. Space is very limited so please call John or Amy at 232-1263 ext. 21 to register.

KaBam! Children's Book Group

KaBaM! is THE book group for all youth in Grade 6 and younger. KaBaM! celebrates the wide selection of children's literature available by creating a fun and open atmosphere for children to read and discuss a diverse assortment of stories. KaBaM! has had an active summer discussing pirates, princesses and superheroes.

Starting this fall, KaBaM! will be meeting once a month to talk about the Young Reader's Choice 2011 Nominees (Grade 4-6 Division). Each month, book group participants will read and explore a new title. The monthly meeting will include discussion of the book, an introduction to similar titles, and an activity related to the themes of the book.

KaBaM! is currently seeking feedback from potential participants for a convenient day and time to hold these meetings. All feedback may be sent to the book group coordinator, Jamie, at kabambookgroup@gmail.com.

Free Rides to Library for Children & Seniors

Pocatello's Marshall Public Library is pleased to announce the return of the Reading and Riding Pass. The pass, which was discontinued last year, will begin on August 1st, 2010. Individuals age 18 and younger and those 60 and older with a valid library card can ride the bus to and from the Library for free.

The program was designed to assist children and seniors who may find it difficult to get to the library otherwise.

"We are thrilled to once again offer this popular service to the community, and we are grateful to Pocatello Regional Transit for making it possible," said Kathy Watson, Associate Library Director. "Our goal is to make it easier for children and seniors to take advantage of the wonderful services the Library offers."

The program is a collaboration of the Pocatello Regional Transit (PRT) and the Marshall Public Library.

Well-Known Author to Speak on Fur Trade

Marshall Public Library’s patrons are invited to a discussion, slide show, and book signing by Eric Jay Dolin on his new book Fur, Fortune, and
Empire: The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America.

Dolin traces the dramatic rise and fall of the American fur industry from the first Dutch encounters with the Indians in the early 1600s to the rise of the conservation movement in the late nineteenth century. Populated by a larger-than-life cast—including Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant; President Thomas Jefferson; America’s first multimillionaire, John Jacob Astor; and mountain man Kit Carson—Fur, Fortune, and Empire is the most comprehensive and compelling history of the American fur trade ever written.

Dolin is also the author of Leviathan: The History of Whaling In America, which was chosen as one of the best nonfiction books of 2007 by The Los Angeles Times and The Boston Globe. He will be at Marshall Public Library on August 3, 2010 at 7 pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Baby Boomer Fellowship

Chubbuck’s Portneuf District Library and Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library are pleased to announce that Karri Alderson and Amy Campbell have been selected as Fellows in the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Western Regional Fellowship, Transforming Life After 50.
Facilitated by a partnership between the Idaho Commission for Libraries, California State Library, Oregon State Library, and Washington State Library, the Fellowship will introduce 93 selected public library professionals from eleven states to a new framework for serving and engaging midlife adults, ages 50+. The Fellows will re-examine traditional views on aging and explore innovative ways in which public libraries can become centers of productive aging, lifelong learning, and civic engagement.
The Fellowship will run from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. The year-long program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute for Museum and Library Services, Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program.

2010 Summer Reading Programs

Water themes abound with summer reading programs for all ages at the Marshall Public Library. The program begins June 1, 2010 and ends August 13, 2010.

From pre-school through adults, the Library has reading programs and many reading related activities scheduled for the summer. There are incentives from books to t-shirts and many other prizes available to those who participate. There will also be book groups and movies for both grade schoolers and teens, as well as weekly art activities. Teens will culminate with a pirate scavenger hunt party August 13.

Water Your Mind Summer Reading for Adults

Pocatello's Marshall Public Library, 113 S. Garfield Ave., encourages all adults in the community to "Water Your Mind" with the Summer Reading Challenge 2010. Adult readers can join in the fun of the summer reading program and be good reading role models for the younger readers this summer. This program allows participants to read some of their favorite books and also encourages them to, perhaps, learn some trivia.

Registration begins June1, 2010. Each participant will receive a reading log to keep track of the books they read this summer. Along with the reading log, different challenges will be made available throughout the summer. Each time a participant finishes a challenge they will receive a small prize and will also be entered into a drawing that will be held at the conclusion of the program. MPL's New Website Debut

It’s been two years in the making, but the Library’s new website is finally here. Marshall Public Library's new Website went live on April 28, 2010 at www.marshallpl.org.
The new website was designed for ease of use in finding the information you need quickly. The website is best viewed using Mozilla Firefox. You can download that browser free at www.mozilla.com.
As with most new websites, it will take a few weeks to remove the bugs, fix broken links, etc. A few of the pages are still under construction, but they will be available soon. Please let us know if you find something that doesn't work properly.

Summer Reading for All

CHILDREN: “Make a Splash, READ!” will have three sets of reading activities. Preschool-K; 1st- 3rd grade; and 4th-6th grade will be able to win up to two prizes throughout the summer by completing 5 activities for each prize. There will also be an Art Institute for grade school ages on Tuesdays at 2 pm, a movie afternoon on Thursdays at 2 pm, and a youth book group every other Friday.
TEENS: “Make Waves at Your Library!” All teens (or youth entering 7th through 12th grades), are invited to play BINGO for up to 3 prizes. We will have raffles for bowling passes, swimming passes, and CD coupons with a final Pirate Hunt Party. Additionally, an Early Week activity for teens will be held on Monday afternoons at 3 pm. Join us for crafts, a writer’s workshop, cosplay, water balloon volleyball and more! MOVIES for TEENS will be shown every other Friday afternoon at 3:30pm (PG-PG13 rating)! Have you ever wondered how much energy your household appliances use? Come check out an Energy Efficiency Kit and find out.
The Idaho Commission for Libraries has partnered with Idaho Power, Avista Utilities, and Rocky Mountain Power to provide these kits to Idaho libraries.
The kits contain an instruction booklet, as well as a Kill-A-Watt meter to measure the energy used, all in a zippered pouch. The library has two kits available for check out. Ask staff at the circulation desk for more details or go to www.lili.org/energy.

Cecily Retires after 5 Years at Library

After working at MPL in circulation and interlibrary loan for five years, I am retiring on May 31. I will miss the personal contact with the patrons. I enjoyed discovering new authors and reading my old favorites.
After retiring, I’m going to do more reading and digging in dumpsters for treasures. I love yard sales and will be doing more of those.
Immediately after retiring, I am going to the coast for six weeks and on a Montana road trip. I’ll also be busy trying to sell my house. And, best of all, I will be hanging with my 3 kids, 9 grandkids, and 3 great-grandkids!

Census Questionnaire Assistance @ the Library

The Marshall Public Library is hosting a Questionnaire Assistance Center for the 2010 Census. As of yesterday, March 15, 2010, a US Census Bureau employee will be at the Library, 113 South Garfield Avenue, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and again from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday to assist individuals with their 2010 Census forms. This service will be available through April 19. Questionnaire Assistance Centers (QAC) have been established to aid residents in filling out their 2010 Census forms. QAC are there to assist, for example, those unable to read or understand the questionnaire. Large-print questionnaires are also available to the visually impaired upon request, and some QAC locations have access to a Teletext Device for the Deaf(TDD) to help the hearing impaired. 2010 Census questionnaire language assistance guides are also available in a variety of languages.
Another option for individuals who did not receive forms or need help filling out their forms is the Telephone Questionnaire Assistance center. The toll-free telephone number to reach this center is 1-866-872-6868. (Those who prefer a Spanish-speaking operator should dial 1-866- 928-2010.) Deaf and hard-of-hearing persons can call the TDD number at 1-866-783-2010. The lines will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (local time) seven days a week through July 30, 2010.
A second QAC in the Pocatello area is at the Idaho Department of Labor at 430 North 5th Avenue. Three “Be Counted” sites have also been identified at Idaho State University, Pocatello City Hall and the Portneuf District Library. The “Be Counted” sites will have blank copies of the 2010 Census forms for individuals who did not receive a form or are concerned they have not been otherwise counted.

Bellon Visiting Author

Yangsook Choi, a famous author and illustrator of children’s books, will be visiting Marshall Public Library on March 15 at 4:00 p.m. in the Kids Corner. Ms. Choi, who is originally from Korea, has written and illustrated many books for children. She has been selected as the Bellon Visiting Author for 2010. In addition to her appearance at the library, Ms. Choi will be visiting some of the local elementary schools and giving a public presentation at the College of Education on the ISU campus. Some of her books include: Peach Heaven, The Name Jar, Rice Is Life, and Landed.

The Census is Coming

This month the 2010 Census forms will be mailed. The Census has a huge impact on our community. Each person counted in our county entitles our local economy to an average of $1220 federal dollars per year, that’s over $12,000 for the census decade. This year’s census form is the shortest in history, consisting of only 10 questions, requiring only 10 minutes to complete. And the Census Bureau takes your privacy seriously. By law, individual census data cannot be shared with anyone, including law enforcement agencies.
It’s in Our Hands, Bannock County. Please remember to complete and mail back your Census form when it arrives, and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to do the same. For anyone who is thinking of continuing education beyond high school, the Library is the place to begin. Resources are available to help with such steps as investigating careers, picking a school and exploring funding options.
Discover which careers might interest you, research occupations and search for colleges online using CIS. Idaho CIS provides career and educational planning solutions for people in Idaho. Comprehensive sources of career information are available about Idaho and the nation. Information and data are gathered from hundreds of sources. Internet computers are available in the Library to view this source at http://www.cis.idaho.gov.
The Eastern Idaho Funding Information Center (EIFIC), located upstairs in the Library, has information to help you find the funding you will need (such as scholarships) for your education. Search for grants online using Foundation Grants to Individuals Online. Use this database for free only in the Library.
Many colleges now offer courses you can take at home or online. They often require that tests be taken with a proctor, someone the student doesn’t know, frequently a librarian. The Reference Department offers this service for free. Call the Reference Desk (232-1263 ext. 22) for more details.

Volunteer Program for Retired Seniors Presented at Library

Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library will host a program on Monday, March 1, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. for people of retirement age who are looking for opportunities to volunteer locally. The program will be presented by Helen Mayberry, Director of Senior Services for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program at SEICAA. People over 55 comprise about 20% of the total population in Bannock County. Many people in this age group are retired and are interested in donating their time to local organizations in need of assistance. Mayberry will provide information on volunteer opportunities around Pocatello and help those interested in volunteering to connect with the organizations that best fit their interests and lifestyles.

Volunteers from the American Association of Retired People who have received training from the IRS and the Idaho State Tax Commission staff this program. They are ready to assist you in the electronic filing of your Federal and state tax returns. And it’s absolutely free!
This program is focused on the low-income or elderly but is open to everyone. Starting on February 9th and going through April 13th, the volunteers will be here every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm. No appointments will be taken and it is first come, first served.
Bring the following (if necessary) with you:
*Valid picture ID and social security cards or a document from SSA with your name and SSN
*Social Security cards for dependents
*Form W-2 from each employer
*Forms 1099-INT or 1099-DIV (to report interest and dividends)

Vintage Movie Festival

The Pocatello Vintage Movie Festival will be held at the library on Wednesday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. These movies were donated to the library, and have been transferred to DVD. The 90 minutes of video includes footage of Pocatello parades, events, and community gatherings of the 1930s.
Just a few of the “movie stars” have been identified. It is hoped that community members will recognize a grandparent, friend, or perhaps a former school teacher. Longtime Pocatello residents just might see themselves on the screen.

Declare Your Food Independence @ Your Library

Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library will host a program about the importance of buying locally grown food on Thursday, February 4that 7 pm. The program will be presented by John and Karen Brady, founders of Brady’s Plant Ranch, Ltd. The Bradys will provide information on the economic and health benefits of growing your own food and buying locally grown produce and meat. They will also discuss how to harvest food from your own garden year round, why farmers’ markets are important, and how to develop a professional relationship with a local farmer.

Talking Books for the Visually Impaired

As our population gets older, we all want to know ways we can help ourselves or someone we love keep reading. According to the National Eye Institute, 1 out of 28 Americans over age 40 face vision loss or blindness. The Library wants to make the community aware of our resources for those requiring print alternatives.We can sign our patrons up with the Talking Book Service (TBS), a program offered by the Idaho Commission for Libraries. TBS provides thousands of books for people unable to read standard printed material. Even better, TBS services are provided free of charge, including the mailing of reading materials and playback machines.
And it’s not just people with vision problems who can use the TBS service. Anyone who can’t hold a book, turn pages, or has been diagnosed by a professional with a reading disability due to an organic brain dysfunction can use this free service. Over 65,000 audio books are available, as well as free subscriptions to numerous magazines, access to Braille books and magazines, and descriptive videos and DVDs. In addition, the audio book catalog is recorded and all materials can be searched and ordered via the online catalog.

Library Returns to Regular Hours

The Library returns to regular hours in January. Throughout December the Library was open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. Regular Library hours are Monday through Thursday 9 am to 9 pm and Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm. The Library is closed Sunday.
The shortened December hours were established to give the Library staff an opportunity to attend trainings throughout December. The shortened hours enable all the staff to be at the Library at once, something that never happens during normal hours. Trainings this year included information on customer service, public safety, advertising the Library, and updating the staff on new Library services and policies.
Your patience and understanding of the shortened public hours enables us to better serve all the public for the rest of the year. Thank you for making it possible!

New Faces @ the Library

The circulation department would like to welcome two new employees to our staff, Lisa Petersen and John Bickelhaupt. Lisa is working full time and John is half time. They both started working at the library in December.
Lisa is a mother of three and owner of two cats, two parrots and a turtle. She has been living in Pocatello off and on throughout her life. She loves to read various types of books but her favorite is Christian novels. She is a very down to earth person and enjoys music, art and nature.
John is the father of two boys and he also owns 3 cats. He can often be found reading books by Robert Graves and Eiji Yoshikawa. John has lived all over the country including Pittsburgh and Seattle. Bookmobile is Coming to Town

It’s finally here, and just in time for Christmas! Last year, a green bookworm slithered into the elementary schools, walked in the parade, and performed a rap song asking all the community members to give a nickel for every year of their age so the Library could buy a bookmobile for the city. People gave very generously, and the result is that we had just enough to purchase a vehicle that will soon be a familiar sight in Pocatello, taking books to people all over town.
So now it’s time to celebrate! Come to the library on Saturday, December 19, 2009, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. to welcome the arrival of Pocatello’s new Bookmobile! Everyone who gave a nickel (or any other amount)---or even anyone who will use this exciting service is invited to come to Bookmobile Party! We will have punch and cookies, music, smiling faces, and even a treat for the children! Most of all, you can see our beautiful new vehicle, the Library’s gift to the community.

December Library Hours

During the month of December the Marshall Public Library will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. “This change will allow us to complete needed projects and training during December that we might not have time for otherwise,” said Mike Doellman, library director.
The library will be closed for the holidays on December 24 and 25, 2009, and on January 1, 2010. The library will resume its regular hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday, on January 2, 2010.

Kim Hirning Wins Friend of the Year

Kim Hirning is the recipient of the 2009 Idaho Library Association Friend of the Year Award. One may ask what makes her shine above other volunteers. Here are just a few examples: It was her time and energy that made it possible for the whole city of Pocatello to join together to read Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. Kim brought the Big Read to Pocatello in October of 2008. It was her idea from the start and once she began the process she made it a priority to see it through to the end. I admire the enthusiasm, determination and love that she has for reading, her community, and her library.
She hasn’t stopped there. She continues to support our library with fundraising projects for a bookmobile and continues to serve with the Friends of the Marshall Public Library. She has so many brilliant ideas I often wonder what she will think of next. She is more than just a friend to our library, she is a part of it!

Gene's Retirement

After close to 36 years of providing service to various elements of the public, I have decided it is time to retire. Overall, I have had a rewarding and successful career. I enjoyed providing assistance to scientists at the INL in various fields of physics, chemistry, chemical engineering,radioactive waste management and other areas so they could accomplish their goals. After being laid off at the INL, I worked in the Idaho Falls Public Library in the Reference Department for a year before accepting my current position in circulation at the Marshall Public Library. I began this career with a lot of frustration because of being laid off. A big shock was that I now had to work with the general public, not just a highly educated segment. A further adjustment was that I was the only male employee, except for the director. I always felt slow in adjusting to this new environment, but the circulation staff was patient and encouraging. I have enjoyed being associated with the entire staff, especially at circulation. I will continue to see you at times because I plan to begin reading again and working on a family project. I will miss all of you, but it is time.

Idaho Career Information System

Explore Careers, choose a training program and/or school, find financial aid, get a job or change jobs and even keep track of your career research using the Idaho Career Information System online. eCIS is very user-friendly and is now available through Marshall Public Library.
Access to eCIS is being provided by The Idaho Department of Labor. The department received economic stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is using some of these funds to expand the public’s access to its automated services throughout the state. This includes providing Idaho Works automated workforce services and Idaho CIS products and services in public community libraries.
CIS, a division of the Idaho Department of Labor, provides eCIS, the state’s internet-based, comprehensive career guidance system. eCIS provides Idaho and national career, workforce and educational information in an easy to use format. The information and exploration tools contained in eCIS are designed to help Idahoans make informed career choices and seek the qualifications necessary to be successful in the workplace.

Scott Balsai in Concert

Music in the Library series continues with local acoustic guitarist Scott Balsai. He will perform a concert at Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library, 113 S. Garfield Avenue, from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, October 17th. The concert is free to the public.
"Acoustic Reflections" is what Scott Balsai calls the compositions he creates on his acoustic guitar. "Each piece," he says, "reflects a sliver of my life, but taken together, they can be seen as musical diary of 'tone poems' which reflect my life as a whole." The compositions carry the listener from Balsai's home in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to his hiking the Appalachian Trail, to his moving across the country and his living, teaching, skiing, fishing and hiking in Idaho.

Scott has recorded two CDs of "Acoustic Reflections" which as Taylor Guitars says, "...ring with sparkling clarity...and...glimmer with the rich, hypnotic pulse of a sun-dappled stream." His first CD, entitled Waiting for the Sun, was recorded in Pocatello in 1998 with the help of Steve Eaton. Scott's second CD, entitled Falling Colors on Prairie Braid, was recorded, with the help of Dan Mihlfeith, in Pocatello in 2004.

Learn a Language at the Library

Parlez-vous français? Sprechen Sie deutsch? Вы говорите русского? If your answer to these questions is non, nein, nyet but you would like to learn, then your Library is the place to start.
There are hundreds of language CDs and cassettes on the second floor that may be checked out for four weeks. The languages available range from French, German, and Japanese to Hindi, Hebrew, Sanskrit, and Irish. The Library also offers English materials for English as a Second Language students and teachers.
These audio materials vary in level of difficulty from beginner with instruction in the the alphabet and the days of the week to advanced with complex stories and translations. Various methods of language learning styles from the very formal to the very conversational are also represented.
If you are planning a trip abroad, looking to supplement formal classroom learning, or you simply want to explore the amazing world of languages, come to the Reference Desk on the second floor and let us show you where to begin.

Voices of the Valley

In an attempt to become a collector of local history, the Marshall Public Library is pleased to announce the beginning of a new program called “Voices of the Valley.” “Voices of the Valley” is an ongoing attempt to bring the history of Portneuf Valley to life through the combined life histories of its long time residents. There are many stories to tell, many facts to learn and we’re doing it one person at a time.
Each participant is given a series of six questionnaires to review and talk about. Each week, we go into the home and record one interview. These interviews are short, relaxed, and informal. The interviews are then transcribed and recorded on CDs. Once all the interviews are finished, we use the stories told to create a life history of the participant. Each participant will receive a personal copy for themselves. The library will also keep a copy on the shelf available to patrons.
We are just wrapping up our first personal history. As always with a new project, we had some kinks to work out. We appreciate the patience that has been shown throughout this production. We also appreciate the help of family members who rounded up old family photos to enhance the text.

Outreach Program

The Outreach Program is designed to assist the elderly and homebound patrons in receiving large print books, books on tape or CD, videos, or DVDs. Members of the Circulation Staff will deliver these materials to individual homes, assisted care centers, the Senior Center, and long-term care facilities. We go to some facilities on a regular schedule because the residents are accustomed to this set routine. We visit other patrons as they call us. This can be more or less frequent depending on the individual. One other function of the Outreach Program is to assist the patron in contacting the State Talking Book Service in Boise if necessary.
This program is strictly a self-rewarding program. We have received many thanks from the administrators of the various facilities for providing this service. However, the best reward is when the individuals themselves thank you for taking the time to come, talk to them, and provide them with the materials they need.

Ghostly Programs @ the Library

What is real in the world in which we live? Can all that is real be touched, smelled, seen, or measured? These are two questions that the Southeast Idaho Paranormal Organization (SEIPO) seeks to answer. In October, SEIPO will present two programs at the Marshall Public Library on their original paranormal research.
On October 14th at 7 pm, SEIPO will present information about local ghostly occurrances and the organization’s research methods. Local cases such as a haunted demolition derby car, Virginia City in Montana, and a local haunted family will be discussed. The program will include photographs and audio that SEIPO has collected during the course of their
research.
On October 30 from 6:30-9pm, SEIPO will present a program specifically for teens. All teens are welcome to attend. Bring your digital cameras and recorders and discover just how haunted the Library is!

KITTIE WILKINS Horse Queen of Idaho

One of the most fascinating women of the Old West, KittieWilkins, the Horse Queen of Idaho, was the only woman at the turn of the twentieth century whose sole occupation was horse dealer. TheWilkins herd, the largest owned by one family in the AmericanWest, boasted 10,000 range-bred horses, all with the famous Diamond Brand. Wilkins sold horses by the train load, making the largest horse sale ever in the West when she sold about 8,000 head in a single transaction in 1900. She was featured in hundreds of newspaper articles in the United States and abroad.

Presented by Philip A. Homan of ISU’s Eli M. Oboler Library. Homan is writing the first biography of Kittie Wilkins, with support from the Idaho Humanities Council.

Folksinger Spook Handy in Concert Sept 24th

Folksinger Spook Handy will perform his first concert in Idaho at Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library, 113 S. Garfield Avenue, at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 24th. The concert is free to the public.
Spook's songs range from spiritual to songs about social responsibility, sometimes blatant, sometimes covert and are full of fictitious and real characters that have walked through his life. The settings of many Spook tunes come from the part-time jobs he's had.
The best description of Spook's musical style comes from fellow songwriter briz who says: "The lyrical wit of John Prine, the humor of Arlo Guthrie, the sincerity of John Denver, the boldness of Bob Dylan and the courage of Pete Seeger meld into a cohesive unit that emerges full of hope and promise."
Kim Ruehl of about.com named Spook “Best Folk Artist You’ve Never Heard Of” in 2006.
After his library concert, he will perform at Senang’s that evening at 7:30 p.m. Spook will also be a guest on an upcoming Library Radio Show.

FOLK SINGER BOB NELSON IN CONCERT AT LIBRARY SEPT 18TH

Folk singer Bob Nelson will perform at Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library, 113 South Garfield Avenue, Friday, September 18, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. This event is free to the public. Bob Nelson heard his first folksong at age 13 and for the next nine years built his repertoire of traditional folk songs. Since his retirement Bob has returned to his first love of folk music. He recently started a recording archive project, digitizing hundreds of cassette and vinyl recordings of various folk musicians, and documenting the background of each performer.
When Bob Nelson steps on stage, the room comes alive with his songs and stories. A vital performer, Bob shares his sixty years of song collecting, as well as his knowledge and love of their histories. His baritone voice and consummate guitar accompaniments enthrall audiences, young and old.
While in the area, Bob will also perform a concert at Senang’s on Thursday evening, September 17 at 7:30 p.m., and he will make a guest appearance on the Library’s television show While You’re at the Library.

Banned Books Week Sep 26- Oct 2, 2009

Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and has been held during the last week of September since 1982. While most books on the list were not completely banned, many have been challenged for one these three reasons: 1. the material was considered to be "sexually explicit" 2. the material contained "offensive language" 3. the material was "unsuited to any age group."
Intellectual freedom is an important part of our First Amendment Rights and in the words of Supreme Court Justice, William J. Brennan, Jr., “If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.
As I attended a Young Adult Literature conference last year, I was struck by a statement made by author Barry Lyga (Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy & Goth Girl, Hero Type, Boy Toy), who commented on the lack of sales of one of his newer books. “It’s one thing to take a book away and leave a void, but another to never even let it exist.” It turned out that the low sales were in part due to a major bookstore not even putting his book on the shelves because it was afraid of the subject matter.
In an article for the American Library Association (ALA), Peter P. Doyle states: “Attempts to censor can lead to voluntary restriction of expression by those who seek to avoid controversy; in these cases, material may not be published at all or may not be purchased by a bookstore, library, or school district.”

Thousands and Thousands of Books

What a wonderful summer we had! More than fourteen hundred children signed up for the summer reading program. And those kids read 11,104 books! That is a great achievement. If you visited the library any time from June through August you probably saw (or heard) some of the thousands of children who visited the library every week. It might not have been completely silent, but the library was certainly a place of creative, exciting learning. Each week children made art projects under the skilled direction of local artists, they listened to stories, performed in a drama group, and watched movies in the cool library.
Seeing the busy, involved children made an impression on many people. Even the tiny person who inhabits the area under the display case in the children’s area was affected. One day in the last week of August, after most of the children were back in school, we found a tiny note on the Youth Help Desk addressed to “The Huge Kids.” It was from our tiny
inhabitant, Hobs, thanking the children for a wonderful and entertaining summer. If you would like to read the letter, or see the statistics for our busy summer reading program, please stop at the Youth Help Desk and we would be glad to show you.

MUSIC IN THE LIBRARY Local Musicians to Perform September 5

Local musicians Robert Johnson and Wanda Samdahl will perform a concert at Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library, 113 S. Garfield Avenue, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 5th.
Robert Johnson has been playing guitar as long as he can remember, and Wanda Samdahl began playing the violin in elementary school. Both have performed for years before joining forces this spring. Since then, they have traveled together to several music festivals including performances in Oregon and Utah. Their style has been described as Spanish Classical Acoustic with a little improvisation.

Last Teen Movie Night of the Summer

The Marshall Public Library, 113 South Garfield Avenue, is hosting its last teen movie night of the summer Friday, August 7, 2009. As with other movie nights, the first movie will show at 5:00 p.m., while the second will start immediately following and should end around 9:30 p.m.
The movies that will be shown are:
· 1961’s Westside Story – it is Not Rated and is 152 minutes long; and
· 2008’s Mamma Mia – it is rated PG-13 and is 108 minutes long.
Teens are encouraged to bring their favorite bean bag, comfy chair or soft pillow! The Library will provide the free movies and popcorn. To see either movie or both, participants must be in the Library before 6:00 p.m. when the Library officially closes for the evening.

ADULT LIBRARY BINGO CHALLENGE ENDS AUGUST 15, 2009

The Marshall Public Library’s Adult Summer Library BINGO Challenge is coming to an end August 15, 2009. This challenge was more than just reading books. The challenges included tasks like returning materials on time, posting a comment on the Library’s blog, and even checking out a new book. Each square on the bingo card had a different challenge. As with regular bingo, participants had to complete five challenges in a row for bingo. A completed bingo earned an entry in the prize drawing. A blackout, all five rows completed, earned five additional entries in the drawing. The Library would like to thank the local businesses who made prizes possible for the drawing. Prizes include donations from: Mystique Theater, Sandpiper, Perkins, Mama Inez, and Town and Country Gardens.

Feng Shui Class

An introductory presentation and discussion focusing on beginning Feng Shui will be held on August 18th at 7 pm at the Marshall Public Library. Feng Shui is the art of placement to increase the positive flow of energy. The introduction will be presented by Feng Shui consultant Joni Bateman, owner of Desert Feng Shui. Topics to be covered are: history of Feng Shui, using the Bagua map, incorporation of the five elements, and other helpful tips and suggestions to eliminate clutter. Connie Dubbe Retirement

As I look forward to enjoying my retirement I will definitely miss the friendship and support from the staff here at the Marshall Public Library. I will especially miss the patrons that I have also developed friendships with.
I anticipate spending more time with my husband, children and grandchildren. We have plans to travel, do a lot of fishing and continue our roasted marshmallow eating contest to which I hold the title!

Improv @ Your Library

A teen walks into the library: “I’m looking for a book on whales.” *switch* “I need a magazine article about the planets.” *switch* “Where is the bathroom?” Improvisation requires quick thinking and creativity. On July 8 at 7pm, members of The Comedy Project, Pocatello’s premier improv troupe, will be at the library to teach some basic improv techniques. But why should you learn improv? The basic skills of listening, clarity, confidence, and performing instinctively and spontaneously are important skills for actors to develop. And it’s useful for more than just acting. It’s fun!

Warriors Book Party

The Warrior series is about house cats that have formed four clans in a forest. The clans are enemies, but they keep the peace by obeying the warrior code. The code is followed closely by the cats and has been followed for many generations. When a warrior cat passes away, they join the ranks of Star Clan. Members of all four clans are joined as one to help watch over the clans.
There are three Warrior series with a fourth coming out soon as well as stand-alone titles and a manga series. There will be a Warriors Book Party for children on July 7 at 5:30pm. Registration is required. Vote for your favorite warrior, participate in fan fiction, and test your knowledge of the series. Join us for food, crafts, and a drawing for prizes!

Tea with Jane Austen

Tea with Jane Austen by author Kim Wilson is the latest in the titles being discussed by the members of the Jane Austen book club here at the Marshall Public Library. The delightful little book is itself like a refreshing cup of tea, stimulating, light and easy to digest. Wilson’s book deals with the history of tea in the time of Jane Austen. “Each chapter includes a description of how tea was taken at a particular place or time of day, along with history, recipes, excerpts from Austen’s novels and letters and illustrations from the time.” The MPL book discussion group of Austen fans has been reading books about and by Jane Austen since the first of the year; they meet monthly on every fourth Saturday at 10am in the children’s corner at the Library. Anyone who is interested is welcome to drop by, read, listen, and enjoy a cup of tea.

GRANTSEEKING BASICS WORKSHOP AT LIBRARY

The Eastern Idaho Funding Information Center (EIFIC) is hosting a free workshop for nonprofit grantseekers seeking funds from foundations, corporations, and grantmaking public charities. The workshop will be held at Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library, 113 South Garfield Avenue, July 6, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
Kief Schladweiler, EIFIC’s Coordinator of Cooperating Collections, will offer tips and suggestions on how best to identify funding sources, highlighting the electronic and print resources available for your free use at EIFIC in Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library. The workshop will include an overview of resources at the Foundation Center’s web site and a demonstration of the Center’s searchable databases providing information on thousands grantmakers that support grant projects.
Seating is limited. Call Marshall Public Library at 232-1263 ext. 22 to register. Participants who wish to bring their own PC will have wireless access. Those without a PC are also welcome.

Small Engine Repair Reference Center

Summer is here and many of us have items with small engines that need tune-ups or repairs. Marshall Public Library provides free online access to the information you need to fix them yourself.
The Small Engine Repair Reference Center is a full-text database intended for anyone seeking information about small engine maintenance and repair. A full set of small engine repair manuals contains thousands of accurate and concise step-by-step maintenance and repair instructions for hundreds of small engine machines and their supporting components. Routine maintenance, such as tune-ups and brake service, as well as more extensive repairs involving engine transmission disassembly are covered. Engines types include motorcycles, ATVs, personal water craft, snowmobiles, lawn mowers, tractors, snow blowers, generators, and more. Many documents contain photos and detailed illustrations to visually support step-by-step procedures.

Express Yourself @ Your Library!

Express Yourself @ Your Library! is our summer reading theme especially for TEENS. If you will be entering grades 7-12 next fall, this is for you.
TEENS at Marshall Public Library will be exploring the many ways of expressing themselves through visual, dramatic, written, and political avenues. Read books based on plays or movies, books about artists, poets, musicians, or celebrities, or even something with a political bent. With 10 challenges to choose from, there is something of interest for everyone. Up to four prizes will be awarded (one per week) for reading books, attending a teen movie or program, or doing a creative project to display in the library.
We have many TEEN activities planned throughout the summer, including a monthly book club, movie nights, board game night, console gaming event, and a poetry slam. TEEN summer reading culminates with a Reader’s Theatre and end-of-summer party.
Express Yourself@ Your Library! began in May with our monthly Teen Movie night. A double feature will be shown for TEENS on one Friday each month through August. Show times begin at 5pm and continue after-hours until about 9:30pm.

Creative Writing Groups for Youth

Attention young poets, novelists, journalists, and scribes of all types! We want you for the two youth creative writing groups at the Library!
Write On! meets twice a month on Mondays to share writing and encouragement. All children between the ages of 9 and 12 are welcome to attend. This is a great opportunity for kids to express their creativity through writing as well as stretch their skills with guided writings.
Literally Talented Teens also meets twice a month on Thursdays. This group is for all youth ages 13-18. Members share original writing and illustrations and offer support and positive feedback to their fellow teen writers.
Both groups are free, informal, and open to all youth who would like to share the unique joys and frustrations of being a young writer.

Why should the Youth Dept. have all the fun?

Summertime at the library is a busy time. The children and teens are often involved in the Summer Reading Program, but my question to you is, why should the youth department have all of the fun? So, this year the Marshall Public Library is presenting a summer program just for adults. Sign-up begins June 1st at the Reader’s Advisor desk; registration is required. The Adult Summer Library BINGO Challenge is going to last through the summer until August 15.
This challenge is not just reading books. Other challenges include returning your materials on time, posting a comment on the library’s blog, and even checking out a new book.
Each square on the bingo card has a different challenge. As with regular Bingo, participants must get five in a row for Bingo. A completed Bingo earns an entry in the prize drawing. A Blackout, all five rows completed, earns five additional entries in the drawing. There will be some fun prizes too that are made possible through donations from local businesses.
Come in and sign up today for the Adult Summer Library BINGO Challenge. Registration is limited. The sign up period is June 1 through June 30. Be among the first to register and receive a bookmark.

LOCAL EDUCATION EXPERT/AUTHOR PRESENTS PROGRAM AT LIBRARY

Sister Dorothy Prokes, F.S.E., founder of Pocatello’s CRE-ACT School, will present a program especially for educators May 27, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Marshall Public Library, 113 South Garfield Avenue. Prokes will discuss her recent book, A Road Map to Education, in which she outlines her CREative ACTing approach to education that she developed in 1972 after more than 30 years as an educator. This alternative approach to a traditional curriculum involves the integration of the visual arts, music, dance and drama into the curriculum in order to encourage personal development and formation among students.
Copies of A Road Map to Education will be available for purchase at the program, as well as copies of the accompanying teacher’s manual. For more information, call the Library at 232-1263 extension 41.

MARSHALL PUBLIC LIBRARY ON TELEVISION AND RADIO

Every month Pocatello’s Marshall Public Library produces shows for local radio and television stations. Citizens are invited to tune in to hear the latest about what the Library has to offer.

While You’re @ the Library is the Library’s television program for adults. This show features book reviews, information about Library programs and current displays, and interviews with special guests. It is shown several times each month on Government Access Television, Channel 11. Call the City’s Video Services Department at 234-6280 for broadcast times or check www.pocatello.us/Vision12/12.html.

The Library also hosts a television show for children called Once Upon a Time at the Marshall Public Library. Each month the children’s librarians read and tell stories, sing songs, and introduce children of all ages to wonderful tails. This program is also shown on Government Access Television, Channel 11.

Finally, don’t forget to listen to KISU 91.1 FM for The Marshall Public Library’s Radio Program. It is a collaboration between the Library and Idaho State University. The show features information about Library events, programs, and interviews with special guests, including Canadian Folk Singer Bruce Murdock, NPR’s P.D.Q. Bach Peter Schickele, Seattle mystery author J.A. Jance, Book Lust author Nancy Pearl, and Olympic saber fencer Peter Westbrook. The program airs the 2nd Monday of each month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Teen Summer Activites @ the Library

Marshall Public Library will be exploring books through the arts with a summer reading program especially for TEENS, Express Yourself @ Your Library!

We have many TEEN activities planned throughout the summer, including: a monthly book club; movie nights; poetry slam; console gaming events; board game night; culminating with a Reader’s Theatre and end of summer party. And, of course, the annual summer reading program challenging teens to read and win prizes!

We will be kicking off Express Yourself@ Your Library! on May 15 with our monthly Teen Movie night. A double feature will be shown for TEENS on Fridays of each month beginning with two movies based on the very popular vampire romance book, Twilight. Following this will be a comedy night in June featuring Adam Sandler movies, a July drama movie night, and a movie musical night in August. Show times begin at 5pm and continue after-hours until about 9:30pm.
